Removed the Spals Today
Well to my suprise on a 97 deg day It ran 20+ DEG cooler WITH THE AIR on.
Now I'm all for new technology but I still don't understand the fact that the spals are only 2/3 the size of the big block griffin radiator so that tells me they were not doing the job. maybe on the small blocks they work
I know this will go against the grain of all you spal fans but this has fixed my problem.. :D :D

It makes me wonder if the Spal fans were blowing in the right direction? My Spals keep the L88 cool (<205 F) in 100 degree weather while driving city streets and I don't have any mechanical fan or shroud whatsoever. The much cheaper, but same sized fans from Summit didn't work nearly as well.
Bottom line though, I am glad you've got it working. That is too beautiful a car to feel uncertain about driving on a hot day. You did one heck of a great job on the restoration!
Chuck
I was running cooler before, so I put the shroud back on, bought a heavy duty fan clutch from Hayden and an 18" fan. Before the spals, I was running a 17" direct drive fan. Now, during 97 degree days, I cruise at 190 degrees and get up to 210 in stop and go traffic, with the A/C on. I have never gotton over 210 degrees. With the spals, I was at 205 and up to 220+, before I shut it down. I think that everyone needs to evaluate their environment and car combinations, before considering the spals. A lot of people on the forum run them with success. They just did not work for my location and car.
Two things I noticed that were different with the spals versus a stock system: 1. Free air across the radiator (at 30 MPH+) is restricted with a sealed shroud, eventhough the spals have rubber flapper ports above and below the fans. 2. Air from the spals, is directed downward toward the front crossmember and not over the motor. With my aftermarket front end and 84 lenses, I reduced the amount of free air flow, so a premium is put on the fan and shroud to move air across the radiator and motor.
(just kidding)
Chuck, Thanks for the compliment and yes they were in the correct direction. thats one of the first things that came up when I started with this on an earlier post
Gwhite75, I think the first major thing I noticed was the amount of time it now takes to get up to temp, with the spals I was hitting 190 or 200 within the first couple of miles and now it takes at least 8-10 miles to get to the same. keep in mind that my overheating problem was with the air only and now that has greatly improved. BTW this engine has stock heads and a mild cam only. Thanks for the comments guys!!
