Default Removed the Spals Today

Yes I did, Well after 4 months of driving after the resto I finally decided in order to get to the root of my overheating problems it was time to go back to the original setup. so this weekend I pulled everything out and put in the original shroud (new) and extension. In case you don't remember I purchased this car totaled and I had never driven it before May of this year after the resto.
Well to my suprise on a 97 deg day It ran 20+ DEG cooler WITH THE AIR on.
Now I'm all for new technology but I still don't understand the fact that the spals are only 2/3 the size of the big block griffin radiator so that tells me they were not doing the job. maybe on the small blocks they work
I know this will go against the grain of all you spal fans but this has fixed my problem.. :D :D

Don,

It makes me wonder if the Spal fans were blowing in the right direction? My Spals keep the L88 cool (<205 F) in 100 degree weather while driving city streets and I don't have any mechanical fan or shroud whatsoever. The much cheaper, but same sized fans from Summit didn't work nearly as well.

Bottom line though, I am glad you've got it working. That is too beautiful a car to feel uncertain about driving on a hot day. You did one heck of a great job on the restoration!

Chuck

I did the same thing and sold them. My motor is not a highly modified motor, just a .020 over 454 with a base line turbo camshaft and aluminum heads. I thought I could gain some hp and room, if I bought the dual spal fans. I built a sealed aluminum shroud and hooked the fans up, behind a Griffin radiator. I could not keep the temperature under 205 degrees at cruising speed (70+) and it would not recover, after I slowed down. Granted, I was running the A/C and it was 91 degrees.

I was running cooler before, so I put the shroud back on, bought a heavy duty fan clutch from Hayden and an 18" fan. Before the spals, I was running a 17" direct drive fan. Now, during 97 degree days, I cruise at 190 degrees and get up to 210 in stop and go traffic, with the A/C on. I have never gotton over 210 degrees. With the spals, I was at 205 and up to 220+, before I shut it down. I think that everyone needs to evaluate their environment and car combinations, before considering the spals. A lot of people on the forum run them with success. They just did not work for my location and car.

Two things I noticed that were different with the spals versus a stock system: 1. Free air across the radiator (at 30 MPH+) is restricted with a sealed shroud, eventhough the spals have rubber flapper ports above and below the fans. 2. Air from the spals, is directed downward toward the front crossmember and not over the motor. With my aftermarket front end and 84 lenses, I reduced the amount of free air flow, so a premium is put on the fan and shroud to move air across the radiator and motor.

Bseery , yes they are for sale although as a florida gator alum I have a problem selling them to a husker unless I can make a little extra off of ya..
(just kidding)
Chuck, Thanks for the compliment and yes they were in the correct direction. thats one of the first things that came up when I started with this on an earlier post
Gwhite75, I think the first major thing I noticed was the amount of time it now takes to get up to temp, with the spals I was hitting 190 or 200 within the first couple of miles and now it takes at least 8-10 miles to get to the same. keep in mind that my overheating problem was with the air only and now that has greatly improved. BTW this engine has stock heads and a mild cam only. Thanks for the comments guys!!

Pushers or pullers? Did you check to see if you where getting full power to them? Maybe power was getting pulled from the fans when the ac was on or maybe your alt is weak and was not putting off enough juice. But since you got it fixed, no sense rehashing it.
