I FINALLY got around to putting in a new speedometer cable. But as always I was working on it alone. So when I got the old one out is when I discovered it wasn't even broken! But I figured it's probably 34 years old and it's out of the car anyway, might as well put the new one in before I lose it. Anyhow while putting it in I.ve got both ends at the same time. I connect the speedo side and notice if I turn it fast, I get a little movement on the face of the gauge. Great at least the gauge works! But opon connecting the other end to the tranny and test driving it, no movement of the guge! So I'm thinking it must be that little plastic gear in the tranny? What type of nightmare are those to change? It's a M21 if that makes any difference. l :jester

Re: #$%^&* speedometer! (Robert Holtman)
I have an automatic and am not sure what an M21 is.
The automatic speedo gear is a piece of cake to remove. One bold in a Y bracket secures the gear assembly in place. The gear assembly is made up of a metal holder and a plastic gear.
Remove the bolt and bracket, slide out the assembly... replace the gear and reassemble.
The hard part is getting the right gear. You need to know how many teeth your gear has (or had ??). They are also color coded. The plastic is different colors based on the number of teeth.
OK Zip sells them all. But they don't mention which one is which. Smokemup.com used to have a program to calculate the amount of driven teeth you need for your gear ratio. But of course now that I need it, it's not there. I need the gear for a 3.70 geared rear end. Zip does say "click here to calculate driven gear number" but it's not a link. Anyone know where to find out what driven gear I need? I could take it out first but I'd rather have all the parts ib front of me.
