Default Test brake booster off the car.

Is this a good way to test a brake booster off the car.

I would think I should be able to get some vacuum reading using a hand pump, or will this take to many pumps to read anything ?

The check value seems to work, I get vacuum when disconnected from the booster.

The front seal is held in place by the master cylinder and may leak without one bolted to it.

Well I tested the original unit vs a rebuilt unit.

This original never held any vacuum and the rebuild held vacuum. It does take many pumps using a hand pump, but I was able to get 14" of vacuum before I stopped.

So for me this was a valid test off the car.

Next I will see if the brakes behave better when I re-install everything.

I was looking at that option, but all the extra fluid lines, cooling etc, is something I am not ready for. I hate leaks, and I am not convinced the system is realable enough. Reliable meaning leak free. I cannot get reliable power steering hoses that dont leak every 3 years.

If you want to repeat the test, pullout the seal, check for damage, and and put some grease around where it seals to the housing.

No luck still no vacuum. Leak must be somewhere else on the original unit.

Well I now had a chance to pull the car out of storage and test the brakes.

All I can say is the brakes now work much better.

The previous problem was when I would run WOT and then go to the brakes quickly I would need a lot of pedal travel to get the brakes to start working. Steady driving the brakes seem to work normal.

With the test using the vacuum pump the original unit fails, while the replacement unit works / holds vacuum.

Now the road test the brakes work consistently reguardless of how I drive.

This same test also works while on the car. Same result as off the car.

So the original vacuum booster was bad.
