I have looked all over this forum for info to get the old carpet off my storage compartment covers and all I find is that it is a big PITA. Can anyone who has done this tell me how it is done? I have tried scraping but that does not seem to be very effective. I have heard that it is not worth the effort and just buy new doors, (From a vendor), and some guys that say it's really hard but don't say what you need to do. Is there something you can soak the doors in to loosen the carpet? What did Chevy use for glue to hold these in place and is there a solvent that would dissolve the glue? Without dissolving the doors at the same time. Thanks, Wells :flag
Yep, big PITA. If money is not the issue, but the kit. My time is worth more than I spent. I just cut my carpet off with a utility knife and sprayed some kind of solvent that I forget.
I put new carpet on about 6-7 years ago, and it was one of those simple jobs I forget exactly how i did it...either just peeled the carpet off and glued on new....or used a solvent, nothing exotic though..try carb cleaner, gasoline, alchohol, mineral spirits, or even MEK.....
but now it's faded mess, I think I"m using black formica this trip....

Re: Remove carpet from storage covers (mrvette)
I tore up the liners or plastic trim. I then pulled off the old carpet .I tried glue stripper then used a sander and went at it hard. Probably easier to buy the whole deal.
Re: Remove carpet from storage covers (paintdaddy)
Trust me you will save yourself alot of cussing and headaches if you buy the pre assembled kit.
AMEN BROTHER !
I bought the carpet kit and new plastic trim for the door, the nice folks at The Last Detail tried to sell me the door set that is already covered but I laughed because I couldn't justify spending the money especially since the door carpet pieces came with the carpet kit.
Well let me tell you it would have been money well spent. My fingers were busted up and hurting for a week. I said words I didn't know I knew
What a major PITA
Hope this helps
Even if you have to save up for it.... Definitely, buy the entire frame and carpet kit. If you're going through the trouble of redoing the interior... do it right! You will NEVER be able to duplicate the look of a new set of new carpet on new compartment doors.
I just got finished with project this weekend. What a PITA. I replaced the outer frame as well as the door frames and the carpet. I would definetly by the preassembled doors if I had it to do over. To get the carpet off I soaked the carpet with lacquer thinner for quite a while and then still had to chisel it off with a putty knife. I would guess that I have over 15 hours in the deal counting painting the frames and riveting the hinges and aligning the doors. Good Luck, Craig
OK Guys. I got the message, Thanks for all your input. My main frame is in good shape and the door bezels had just been replaced last year so they are in good shape. I am going to get new door panels and use the carpet that came in my carpet set. There just does not seem to be an easy way to remove the old carpet. Thanks again to all who responded with advice, you all spoke with one voice, " Don't try to use the old doors!"
