I'm planing to do a trans fluid and filter change. Should I warm it up first or change it cold?

Change it cold. You'll probably end up wearing some of it and at least it won't burn.

Got it done, glad it I was cold, wearing a lot of fluid. Even with a lift it wasn't fun...next time valvoline can do the deed.

It's a lot easier if you add a drain plug to the pan the first time. Virtually no mess after that.

Mine is a TH400, it was a metal filter. There was some black residue in the bottom of the pan, but otherwise it looked good... No metal shavings and the fluid didn't look or smell burnt.

That is a cloth filled element encased in metal

Make sense now. The metal one I removed didn't have anything inside, but the new one did. I suspect the cloth/paper in the old one "dissolved" overtime and was in part what made up the sludge in the bottom of the pan.

Who in their right mind would do this without changing the filter?
