I have to replace my power steering pump about every 2 years but this time I wanted something more trick, a better highperformance pump. I went to the local Canscar race shop and saw a small high performance pump nascar type pump that had a remote resovoir. It puts out 3 gallons per minute at a pressure of 1160 psi. It was super compact, light weight, safe to 9000 rpm and about $175 american plus mounting brackert plus remote resovoir. I bought the pump and the mounting bracket but the tank would not work for my application so I fabricated one .
I started with a air conditioning aluminum canister and a rad cap and filler neck. The large outlet is the in for the power steering pump and the 2 small #6 fittings are return lines for the power steering control valve and the hydraboost power brakes. This holds alot more fluid then a stock resovoir and hopefully cools it better with it's remote location.
I believe Monty runs a trick pump like this with the romote resovoir.
Anyway these are 2 pictures of my homemade tank. It bolt to the fender and the filler neck sticks out for filling. Most of the tank is hidden under the lip.
Very  Norval. I'd love to see a pic of the pump too if you could post one ;) . How does the remote resovoir work since I know that the stock is sensitive to how much fluid you put into it? TIA :)
427V8. If I knew how to build a pump I would build one but that is beyond me :)
Fevre. I don't have any bumps or leaks on my exhuast system. I tig weld all the stainless joints and make a smooth leak free job of it. It just cost me about $1700 to do a good exhaust system but at least I have the tig welder for future use, like making a remote resovoir. I see lots of poor exhaust systems at cruise nights. I cut a splice stainless elbows together and don't try anymore for a one piece mandral bent system. I have access to a state of the art mandral bender but it has trouble with 90 degree 304 stainless bends. Mild steel is no problem but at 65 degrees the 3 inch stainless starts to wrinkle. I just buy elblows and cut and splice.

As far as fluid level I don't know how to it affects it. I was just going to fill the tank so there was always a good supply to the pump.
I will post a picture of the pump and the mounting braket tomorrow.
Twinnie. That is the pump. It is light weight, puts out 1160 psi and the mounting bracket is about $45.00 CDN. It comes in blue, red and something else and bolts directly to the block or heads depending on which one you order.
Can't use the head mount, must use block mount because of turbochargers. I still need the bracket, moroso sells the bracket as does sweet. Haven't seen a KRC bracket. These pumps can be had in cast iron and the lightweight alu version.
I needed this pump because I couldn't use the stock one, turbo in the way (couldn't fill it)
I like the fact that yours has 2 returns, one for PS valve & 1 for HB
Here's the KRC kit, bracket & tank included (I don't like the looks of that tank though)
Good looking TIG welds Norval, I wish I was that good at aluminum. I'm pretty good with stainless, but haven't had enough practice with aluminum yet. I bought my pump, block mount bracket, and reservoir from CV Products.
I don't feel so bad now about over-engineering everything and being a sucker for trick looking NASCAR-type components...looks like there are many others with the same disease :).
Monty. 4043 in the preferred rod but it can not be anodized. The welds turn black. 5356 is second choice and it accepts anodizing , so depending on your finish , decides which rod to use.
As for 6061 I don't know. I started with a airconditioning tank that was welded so I assumed it was ok to weld. I machined the weld off one end and the tank came apart. Since the factory could weld it I assumed it would be ok for me.
As I mentioned, I still have alot to learn when it comes to TIG welding aluminum, I did not know that about anodizing. I have always used 4043 myslef, but someone recently told me that 5356 produced a stronger weold, while 4043 had better corrosion resistance.
Very very nice, Norval. I can't wait to be thinking of pretty parts like that.
Way to go!!
I sure wish I still got up to Waterloo like I used to - love to check your
vette in person. Dinner on the top of the CN - weekends at the falls.
Alas - those days are over for now. :(
