After 30 years my exhaust is shot so over the winter I have been looking at a bunch of them but don't want to spend a 1000 bucks . I have a 1976 350 built pretty good with blackjack headers . The guy that works on my car talked me into 1974 big block chambered exhaust system said it will bolt right on and I will be able to put my tire carrier back on . Good or bad ?
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Big block = Good,
Chambered exhaust = Bad. I know more than 1 guy who took the chambered off because it was too loud. I have personally heard them on a small block and they are obnoxious, I could only imagine how loud they would be on big block.
Get SS exhaust and you only have to it once in a lifetime. In dry conditions aluminized pipes will last just about as long

To start with, if you have a 350, you cannot put a big block exhaust system on it. The head pipes are different, and won't line up with the small block exhaust manifolds. You can buy cambered systems made for small blocks.
I have to agree that chambered is load, so it depends on what you like. Personally, I like them, but them I spend a lot of time around race cars with open exhaust.

Glen, since he already has the Blackjack headers, he will need to modify the pipes anyway to fit to the headers. It will probably be little different than modifying 350 header pipes for his Blackjack headers.
Told him I wanted to go to a 2 1/2 . So he told me what to get on the pipes plus he said to get header buddies . He did my trailing arms last year and that went down without a hitch . And he says there wont be any problems with this . I am a little worried about the sound . The ones ive listen to on the net don't seem that bad unless you jump on it , but im in a area with a lot of woods and not many big towns around . So we will see .

You know I read that and then I completely dismissed it from my mind, when I read he was told to get a big block chambered system.

Allen's Stainless makes chambered systems, and can supply them with the correct length head pipes and header collectors already installed, for your headers. You just tell Mike when ordering them, what brand and style headers you have, and he has the dimensions to cut them to length and pre-install the right collectors.
One of the local shops I deal with, likes to put chambered systems on everything he restores (except NCRS cars). A few times they've been to loud for the owners, or their wives, and he's added gas packs were the stock mufflers would go, to tone them down just a little.

I disagree with this. Chambered does not = bad. I have chambered exhaust and headers on my 76 with a mildly built 350 and I think it sounds awesome. It's not too loud or obnoxious at all. I get a lot of compliments on the sound and the lope of the cam is music to my ears.
They are only 2.25, not 2.5, but they are mandrel bent, so will flow very well on a stock, or slightly modified motor (small cam upgrade, headers, intake and carb)...
Price is great for a direct bolt in as well...

No one can tell you if the chambered exhaust is too loud. That's a personal thing and only you can decide that for yourself. With that said, I think they are too loud. I have a small block with Hooker headers and I adapted a full 2 1/2" system from Corvette Central. I like them because the fit exactly like the factory system so you don't have to compromise ground clearance or appearance. If you want a little more sound, they also offer the system with Magnaflow mufflers. And the whole system is only about $400. I've had mine on the car for about 20 years. In that time the mufflers have rusted out once, but they come with a lifetime warranty and CC replaced them for me. Just had to pay shipping o return the old ones.
We offer a nice catback for the stingray (#16710) thats well under $1k. Rather than chambered, ours use a straight-through design for the best performance and longevity. Our exhausts are generally pretty conservative volume-wise, so you can get that deep growl without worrying about wifes/neighbors/police.

I have Magnaflows out back and full length headers up front, and love the sound! Pretty quiet around town. Then you nail it!
Had my exhaust put on today took about 2 hours he said there were no problems. To me sounds great and i am getting to be a old man , rumbles at idle , not much louder then my old one when cruising , but when you jump on it , it will get your attention .
