Default Flywheel question

Going through parts Dad had for the Vette and I came across this flywheel number 3789733 also with casting marks M11 and C246. according to some quick googling, I believe this is a 168 tooth for a 11 inch clutch. Will this work on a 68 427? Or is this for sbc only? Any insight would be helpful. I am sure this will dress up fine just want to be sure it will fit the application.

I guess the first step is to determine if the engine is internally or externally balanced. That will narrow down the parts list for flywheels.

This is what I found from other posts

"Take a quick look at the harmonic balancer. On an externally balanced engine the balancer (backside) will have material removed. If you can get a good look at it, it will be obvious. The internally balanced engines have a symmetric balancer."

I believe the 68 427 is internally balanced, but others will correct me if I am wrong.

Flywheels will interchange between all small block and big block engines that are internally balanced, including 6-cylinders. (I'm not sure about the 348/409's howerver.) This excludes the factory 400 SB and the 454 BB which are externally balanced. Some non original 383's are internally balanced and some are externally balanced.

Bottom line is the flywheel should fit your 427 big block unless someone put in a 454 crank. It may not fit in your bell housing, although blow proofs are typically big enough to accommodate both the large and small flywheel. If your engine came with the small flywheel, you may also have to change the nose on your starter to work with the larger flywheel.

Good luck... GUSTO
