Ok so I have read many threads on inserts for the 4.0 side pipes. Sound is a personal preference but I hope I can get some sound advice here.
I am looking into either the sts or a chambered design. My goals are some thing that I can still carry a conversation at cruise rpm and not loose a lot of performance. I know engine modifications add a little to sound so its a little 350 11:1 with a small roller cam.
I know skunk works awhile ago was going to do some dyno testing but I have not found any results. Has anyone else done any testing.
On the chambered design how much difference is there from a 2-2.25-2.5 through hole?
I have 2.5 inet side pipe now using a 69 factory muffler design from Sweet Thunder
Thanks in advance for the replies.
Been happy with my STS. Had them for years and they just keep working, all metal and nothing to wear out. Check the testimonials at the STS website for testing. I made the center tube cap removable, I uncap them at Talladega/the drags, cap them back up and drive home.
I will be buying some STS baffles when I sell my glasspack style mufflers. I want a loud unrestricted sound though. It's a hot rod not a daily cruiser.
I like the classic chambered muffler. I run the 3" core version but probably too loud for your use. They do make different sizes with less hole and more packing.
I like there sound much better than my previous uncapped STS baffles. Not sure about Dyno numbers between the two but the car picked up a consistent 1.5 mph gain at the track....behind my BB coupe.
Probably going to sell the STS's they work very well, just a bit tinny.
I have the spiral inserts in my OBX side pipes which was very loud. To help tame it, i ordered a roll of stainless steel muffler mesh which was like a very coarse brillo pad. I wrapped a single layer around the spiral insert and put back in place. About 8 months later it's still perfect ! Much quieter and no performance hit.
I think the key to your question is "cruise RPM" not knowing your gears I can only state I have 3.70 and tires a hair over 26" diameter. Cruise at 60 is about 3k and 70 is 3.5K. I had STS and found them at cruise to be loud and lower speeds "tinny". I switched to Sweet Thunder 2.0 and find them to have a deeper sound but by the time I get to 70 mph still pretty loud.

I also have 373 gears. For the price I don't think you can beat the chambered style muffler. I had a 65 Vette back in the 80's with factory side pipes, that was damn loud. It hurts now just thinking about it. I really don't want to try that again. I'm looking at trying a set of 2.25 chambered mufflers. A company in Mi. told me with my engine not to go over 2.25 inserts, if I go to the 2.5 it just wont be enjoyable and I would loose only 2-3hp.
Big brown truck came today this is my first set to arrive. I have a set of glass packs coming that I got from another member.....now just need to find a set of STS inserts then off to the dyno for testing.
