Default PSCV Centering..

I started my 77 since the complete rebuild last night! One little shot of starting fluid and it started on the first click with the distributor set by eye. I didn't even time it yet because I need to get the PSCV sorted out first!!!!!
As soon as it started my front wheels turned hard left by themselves and the power steering pump began to make noise. The car was NOT on jackstands either!
I tried to turn the steering wheel right and it was very difficult.
My front steering system is all new with the exception of the steering box. My PSCV is rebuilt so I assume I need to adjust the nut that is facing the drivers side wheel (its the nut that has a dust cover over it).
The manual says to remove the steering ram piston rod from the bracket on the frame but I have read many threads where guys say that's not necessary. Can somebody who has done this before help me out with some instructions.
I think... what I should do is..
Put the front of the car on jackstands.
Turn that nut (I just don't know if I should turn it CW or CCW) until the wheels start turning right and I guess there is a balance between left and right with the steering wheel in the correct orientation.
Is it as simple as that or do I need to remove the steering ram piston rod too?

You could get it in the ballpark so the wheels don't turn hard to either direction. But you'll eventually need to pull the assist cylinder loose so it can be centered without the other steering parts dragging on it.
