Default rpm problems

im having some difficulty diagnosing a problem . at 1000-3500 rpm the car drives fine . when i go over 4000 rpm the gauge buggs out ( going past redline to 4k like a sesaw). at the same time i feel the car bogg ( mostly in the gas pedal), i have loss of continuous power , and at times it feels like the car will shut off. it got really bad yesterday when the car was in park , the rpm gauge went up to 3000 and back down to 1000 back and forth then shut off. my carb is fresh . im thinking my worst case scenario is timing chain or balancer but not really sure. to tell you the truth , the only thing i know is that my shark doesnt run the way she did last week .

Wish I could help w/problem. Have you checked for sticky dist or ign problem. I saw your headlight conversion. Where did you get it an how much time, money and trouble was it? Would you do it differntly?

Check wiring in & around distributor for shorts. Try replacing the ignition control module inside distributor ... they're relatively cheap ... available anywhere ... but a new genuine GM ig module is tough to beat and not too pricey. Super quick & easy job to do ... retiming not necessary. Don't skimp ... Do insulate the mounting plate of new module with dielectric grease as factory recommends.

i purchased the car with the lights as you see it. it looks great ( especially with the new "cool blue" lights) . the only problem i faced was adjusting them properly. around the light itself there are cases that cover from all 4 sides , these cases hamper most of your adjustments. i fixed the problem by taking the cases off it just doesnt look as pretty , but it is working just fine. if im not mistaken ecklers sells the kit.

i just replaced the wireing with accel custom 8mm. noithing is touching , nothing is torn , nothing is loose. heading over to pep boys right now for the module. is it possible that because of the rain this past weekend water infultrated the dist. and messed things up ?

Yes, I seem to recall you guys got drenched too. YES, YES, dampness in dist can-will cause simimlar probs ... check under cap and under coil (bottom of coil where it connects to rotor button) for water.

Of course check out the dist for water in the cap...and so on...
but the tach is caused by a bad tach filter...it' that black thing on theintake manifold...white wire from HEI to inside to the tach...if you have a mechanical tach...i'ts a bad tach head or drive cable setup and you need replace all that mechanical sh it with electonic...one way or anoher....

the lack of power could well be just a bad fuel filter/pump....

all those who said " COIL " were absalutly correct. water seeped through a missing screw hole and rusted the entire coil , underneath the dist cap was in great condition , nothing needed to be changed. so $55 gets me back on the road (wood) :smash: .
