ANyone know of a good place around NW suburbs( what kind of shop do I call)? I have the heads and manifold off, just the block with the pistons. How do I attach the picker with the mani off?
Re: Where do I rent a cherry picker from? (Blues77)
Ted and Ed's rental in Elgin, or pick up the phone book and look under "rentals-tools" in the yellow pages. You should be able to bolt a chain to the same bolt holes the manifold was bolted to (diagonally) rear corner to front corner. Might want to remove the water pump first... :jester
Re: Where do I rent a cherry picker from? (Blues77)
I've seen people transport entire engines in their back seat. I guess if you don't mind getting it dirty, go for it. Most all the engine hoists I've seen knock down and require assembly to use. probably would fit in the trunk. :D
Re: Where do I rent a cherry picker from? (Blues77)
For $30 any wrecker service will have it out in 10 minutes. No wear and tear and you have both hands free to guide. Same thing going back in after the rebuild.
Re: Where do I rent a cherry picker from? (Blues77)
I rented a hoist from Route 12 Rental in Arlington Heights on Rand Rd, 847-818-8849. It was a nice hoist. You will need to remove/install the engine from the side of your Vette and this hoist worked well for that. Also find someone that has a engine tilter/leveler (bar that hooks to top of hoist that has a handle that rotates and shifts the weight of the engine and allows it to tilt) and get one. It makes the job a lot easier.
To remove engine without intake, get 4 grade 8 bolts and some big washers that will fit the holes on the top corner of each head. I used one of the accesory bolts as an example to get the right size and thread. Make sure the bolts are long enough for the chain, washer and has some left to screw into the head.
Whoops! I just read your post again and noticed your heads are off the block. Check the front and back of the block and see if you can use any of the holes for the accesories and mount the chains there.

The wrecker is a good idea - never heard of anyone doing it until now.
If it's just the short block coming out, it's not that heavy. If you have the
hood removed, then an 8 foot 4x4, a length of chain, and a couple guys
could have that out in a snap.
