Default A/C system capacities.

Hello All, can someone post the capacities for both refrigerant and oil in the A/C system for a 1978?

Thanks!

which gas are you using R12 or R134? 48oz R12 one small can of oil, no label with the specs on the compressor?

Thanks Guys, Mel, converting to 134. So if I understand correctly i need 80% of the 48 oz of R 12 required. Yes there is a sticker that talks about oil, but I just wanted to see what GM said for an oil quantity.

AZ, thanks for the link but it only goes back as far as 85.

If you are converting to R134, do yourself a favor and change out the orifice nozzle as well.

The orifice nozzle is responsible for taking the liquid freon from the compressor and turning it into little droplets. The purpose of the droplets is to absorb the heat and vaporize in the evaporator on their way back to the compressor. The heat absorption boils the freon and turns it back into a gas, and cools the air.

Go to your local Ford dealer and get the 'blue orifice nozzle.' The screen is the correct size for R134

My system works very well after the conversion.

Also, you want to make sure every part is clean before putting the new oil and freon in it. mineral spirits should be used to clean the old oil out from the parts.

Good Luck.

I went to my local Ford dealer and asked for a blue orifice tube and the kid said he could not help me without a part number or year make and model.

Oh boy. I bought that part 8 years ago. Probably can't help you on the part number. Try a google search for 'ford blue orifice tube'
