Default Chambered Exhaust System

I am thinking about buying the chambered exhaust system for my 72, 350CI Shark that Corvette Central has for $350.00. Has anyone installed one of these systems? Any performance increase? What's the quality like? Is it too loud at cruising speed?
Thanks!

I like mine......If its too loud for ya, you can calm it down with an "H" Pipe. That sure made mine quieter.......

I have a chambered system on my 69 350 w/ 4 spd. It has an H pipe on it and sounds ok but I wouldn't buy another one. I had to have a shop re-bend the pipes for them to fit and the the system is restrictive. For the cost of this system a local shop could have fab a tighter fitting system with Flowmaster mufflers for much better performance and sound. Just my opinion.

Had the Allens system on a 70 coup 454 and it was too loud. I would never buy another system like that. It is also a HP robber!! I think a good turbo muffler or flow master would be a better setup, sound and horse power wise, only my opinion! Thad

I may have to reconsider my choices. The chambered exhaust system does reqiuire alot of extra pipe connections that probably should be welded instead of clamped. Hmmmm.......I'll have to think this over.
Thanks for all the responses.

Hi 12Vette: I have had a Mid America Chambered Exhaust on my header equipped 73 for about three seasons now. Yes it's a little loud but for a play car I thinkit's great. My system fit perfect, I had a speed shop bend up some header hookups. My system doesn't have anymore joints than a stock system, and on the plus side you don't have to look at those ugly big mufflers out in back. The system on my car rumbles a idle , full throttle is loud, highway not bad (yes you can listen to the radio). I think you should try to listen to an installed system to be sure . Good luck. Chuck D

MAD system for $299. Nicest sounding exhaust I've heard in years.

here's my opinion http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/the...t/index4.shtml

I have the MAD system on mine and it sounds good. I also noticed a GAIN in HP.

I have an Allen's system on my Vette, but no H-pipe on it. It's loud (all RPMs), but sounds too good to revert back. No dyno info to prove it, but feels like there was no impact to HP/performance.

Got it on mine and I love it. Gained some horse-power.

Note that there is a BIG difference in sound between combination with headers and stock ram manifolds: It is way louder with headers. Over 3500 with WOT, it really screams - but I love it.

If you have got headers, someone must tailer the section between headers and joint through transmission crossmember as this cannot be supplied.

Also note, that you need the hanger-bracket (near the transmission) for the 454-big-block cars (which came with 2,5" tubes from the line) to center the system in the crossmember holes properly. With the 2" hanger, the tube will touch the crossmember during engine movements, thus resulting in a clonk every now and then (took me some time to figure that out...).

Oh, and the supplied hangers at the very rear..... forget about these cheap metal straps! Mine came down within one weeks intervall after a couple of months. That material is just too weak. Better replace it with stronger straps right away to keep you from an embarrasing moment (of course had a nice chick beside me when it happened... )

After all, one of the best investments on my Vette!
