My big block has been "crapping out", above 3500 rpm, when I step on it. I think it might be an ignition problem but I have not had the time to dig into it yet. It idles and runs very good at the lower rpm's. I am running an MSD coil. Can they be tested some how?? A friend suggested that this coil might be bad. I'ts mounted to the intake manifold. Can heat from the manifold affect it's performance?? Can anyone please give me some suggestions as to the possible fix.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the 2 most likely culprits are ignition or fuel delivery. More info would help- Did it just start doing this? Had you made any recent changes? What type of ignition are you running? Have you changed your fuel filter lately? Start w/ the easy to fix stuff first & move on from there.
Are you running a stock Q-Jet? We have the same engine except I am using points with Flamethrower coil. When I recently tuned my carb, I set the float to .375", and I noticed a high RPM stumble. I then reset the height to .260" and solved the problem.
Hi Cam
This is not a "stumble" at high RPM's but a major miss above 3500. I'm pretty sure it is ignition related but I have been wrong before. I am running a 750 Edelbrock on a Performer 2 intake. Ignition is a stock, recurved distributer with a "Crane" XR700 points conversion and a "MSD" coil.
When my float was too low, and I was accelerating hard, it would suddenly cut out pretty violently, felt as if engine was tripping over itself and sometimes would backfire through exhaust. However, it did not sound like a miss-fire, which may be what you have. Keep us posted.
