I have a 69 350/350 engine with Quadrajet carb. base gasket that came with kit is open center and my intake is stock 3927184 cast.
I need the metal shim but shouldn't the base gasket not be open center? Found the shim on line since it is discontinued from GM and they have a base gasket that closes the center--open for throttle bores of the carb. I can get no adj of air on the carb as it is now.
Anyone been down this road before and have any suggestions?
Thanks!
PS...checking on line it does seem that with the metal shim you use a different base gasket...one different from one that is in the kit from NAPA???

Reason: add'l info
The stainless steel "shim" you are referring to is a barrier that prevents the corrosive exhaust gasses that are piped thru the manifold from eroding the aluminum carburetor base plate. The stainless steel barrier goes on first then the open center gasket goes on and then the carburetor.

use a Felpro 60043 against the intake, has a slot
a steel shim in the center Felpro 60731, no slot
and a common 4 hole gasket just as Mr Gasket 4256G, no slot
The other thing you can do is drill and tap and plug the two holes and just use the last gasket
