Default roller rockers

I'm ready to move my RPM range up a bit so I thought I'd try some 1.6 rollers. My torque is a little much for a fairly light car with 3,70' (OK 3,82 effectively) but the specs on a ZZ4 say 355 horse at 5250. So with a bigger cam (basically what a ratio change on the rockers does) will move the power range up a little. Then if that isn't enough, I can always go to a single plain or better flowing heads. Anyway I was all ready to order the Chevy 1.6's from Jim Pace's when a Summit catalog came to the door. They have Crane 1.6's (I think they are better than Chevrolets) a lot cheaper. The only question I have is the Chevrolet ones are self aligning. Will the non self aligning work and are they a pain to align? I've never put in rollers, is it really hard to get right?
Thanks, your STUPID, but curious car guy,
BBBBob :seeya

I think you have to have the self aligning.

Putting in rollers is not different than any other kind of rockers.

Bob,make sure that you check measure your pushrods with new rockers...you will usually need to change the p/rods if you are changing the geometry...Chevy Hiperformance mag did a recent article on this as part of their Bowtie Basics feature.....i have the paired shaft roller rockers which are self aligning...they are pedastal mount with lock nuts so you dont need guide plates or stud girdles..john :chevy

John,

What brand rockers did you get? and where from?
I suspect my rockers are going to fail. have allready had them repaired.
Mine are Yella Terra platinum twin shaft. If i need to go to a diff brand I
still want twin shaft atleast. Id rather not have to import a full shaft
setup.

Cheers, Chris.

Robert:
Also consider Comp Cams Magnum self-align 1.6 roller tips pn 1418-16 ... AND ... their Pro-Magnum self-align 1.6 full rollers pn 1318-16.

John,

The pushrod seats broke :/
I have new pushrods with the ball end on them and a new set of anti pumpup
lifters on there now.
I'm hoping i dont have any problems with them anymore but I still have my doubts.
Anyway time will tell.

Cheers, Chris

Bob,

If you don't have guide plates, you need self-aligning rockers. If you have guide plates, you must use non-self aligning rockers so that they are not fighting themselves.

The ZZ4 (as with all current GM crate motors) comes with self aligning rockers. Hence, they must be replaced with self aligning rockers. To go to non-self aligning rockers, you need to add guideplates (requires screw in rocker studs) and hardened pushrods (may be an issue in terms of length with the hyd-roller lifters).

Some may not agree with me but the General spends big bucks developing engine parts that have to stand up to the 4 or 5 year warrantee. I would recommend the GM 1.6 rockers even though they cost a little more. These rockers were used on production engines (I think LT4 - anyone?) and in my opinion, are a better quality part than aftermarket.

Better pay a little more now than break down and pay anyway later.
