I just recently dyed the same side panels on my 73 convertible. It is oxblood too! I got my dye from Corvette America. It was dull when it dried also. If you apply a few coats it does get a little better but not much. So I also use a matte/"satin" clear coat by Krylon. It gives the part the right finish. I usually spray on 2-3 coats. I've attached some photos below. The first is my horn button with 3 coats of dye and 3 coats clear. I used semi gloss clear on the horn button. You can see the differences. Hope this helps.

I guess only time will tell. My horn button is going on two years now, it was the one of first things I did. Nowadays our cars are usually garage kept and out of extreme sunlight and the elements for extended periods of time, and aren't really used the way they were over 40 years ago.
Any way this is what I used to get the desired appearance. Maybe others will chime in with their techniques.
Regards,
Jim
