I assume most early 70's C3's have the same setup for their A/C switch. I don't know how to describe it so I am hoping everyone knows what I'm talking about. It has a round switch that moves a little orange band up and down to show you witch setting you are on. That little orange band no longer moves. I can feel the switch changing settings and can cout up and down as I move it to get to the setting I want, but this is just one of those little things that bugs me. I tried to take that piece out to see if I could fix it and realized it was going to be a lot or work. Does anyone know if I need to replace that whole AC Switch Unit, and if so, where do I get one? Anyone else had issues like this?
From what you said, it seems that the switch is ok, and the only thing that is broken is the string that moves the orange thingamajiq; yeah, that's a very high tech gadget! You can pull that switch (kind of a multibeer mission, IMO), take it apart (I did that when I painted that face plate), and replace that string.
pingdashf,
Try to find a cheap strap wrench at one of your home centers(Lowes, Homedepot, etc.) As a LAST RESORT you can use a regular pipe wrench, but cover the **** with a cloth to TRY and protect it. You most likely will put digs in the metal though.
Also I am not too sure that the entire unit is still available. I replaced mine a number of years ago and seem to remember seeing that it was discontinued.
Others are correct in that you really only need to restring the indicators.
