Will adding front air dam decrease underhood temps ? Not one on there now . Burnt finger on dipstick . Everything is too hot to touch . Engine temp 185* .

Yes. The car breathes from the bottom and needs that dam to direct air up to your radiator. I put this on top of the original air dam on my '71 to improve cooling.
I don't think the air dam will reduce the engine compartment temps, but it will make your radiator more efficient. I believe it was on the 79 models that GM added an air door to the bottom of the fan shroud to get more cool air into the compartment when driving. I have been trying to get the heat down on my 76. I did away with the headers and wrapped the exhaust. Both made a significant difference.
The Lower Radiator Extension that Robert (rcread) has on his car was sold over the counter back in the late 70's for about $20 if I remember correctly. It attaches to the stock Front Air Dam with two strips of (about 1" wide) metal that "sandwich" the lower portion of the front air dam. The front air dam appears unseen, but it is there behind the extension. Front air dam (spoiler), stock.
