Default Intake carb combo

Hello Vetteheads, Going to do a bolt on for my 76 L82 ideas for what to get for my Baby as far as intake and carb combo that will fit under the hood without modifying the hood to fit. Thanks

Edelbrock Performer with Q-Jet. You can keep your stock air cleaner that way. The ZZ4 intake should work as well.

Ill throw in my 2 cents,
If its performance your after I would recommend a performer rpm or clone variant with a drop base air cleaner. The standard performer looks better than oem stock and is lighter but it performs about the same.

For a stock 76 engine a 600-650 cfm carb would be the best fit (actually the Qjet is a progressive setup which opens up to 750cfm depending on engines needs if I remember right so if your is ok I would keep it) The aftermarket carbs are not as sophisticated.. I had the edelbrock 600 on mine and swapped it for an avenger 670 which would work on your setup too.
My engine isnt a stock setup (or the original engine)...

Without replacing the restrictive heads and allowing the exhaust to flow your really not going to see much as far as performance out of the intake or carb upgrades.

Not without heads...an engine is an airpump and the heads are the regulating valves controlled by the cam. The air has to pass through the air cleaner, carb , intake, heads into the combustion chamber and then back out through the heads to the headers... Think of the heads as the regulation valves that open so far and let soo much fuel/air mixture in and so much out on every combustion cycle.... the 76 smog era heads had small valves and very restrictive passages which = poor performance.

you will see a small increase without them but no where near what you could by replacing the limiting factor. in otherwords it would be like putting really big hoses to the input and output of a small pump and expecting it to pump more...

if your running stock heads with everything elese upgraded its like having a really high end home theater system but using a single yellow composite cable and the red white rca jacks to deliver the sound and video... its only going to be as good as the old analog connections/cables will allow (480I with stereo sound) regardless of all the expensive HD and digital capable components.
(disregard if you your unfamiliar with home theater wiring/setup.)

I've had SBCs with 1.92 intakes that could scream. The 202s are better, but that won't be the limiting factor until many other things are done.

FWIW, the ZZ4 manifold is right at 1/4 inch higher than stock. That quarter made a difference (in my application). Have a great week, Bill

A Performer intake and headers are worth a solid 25 horsepower and 25 ft/lbs of torque. This is also the time to install the 1204 fel-pro intake gasket which blocks off the heat riser in the center of the intake side of the heads.
Install a curve on your distributor and set total timing at 36 degrees at 3000 rpm.....
You will feel a huge difference.....
