Default Fuel type

Bought a 1968 327 with automatic a few months back and finally got it running enough to drive. I put a reman Q-jet, from Eckler's, on it. From the date code, it came off a '69 Chevy. Pretty sure engine/tranny is original and haven't been rebuilt. In park or neutral it idles about 1,000rpm, about 700 in drive. What type/octane fuel have you guys been using? Anyone using lead substitute additive? Someone said avoid 10% ethanol, but I that's all I have around here. Thank you in advance.

use 93 octane and no additives of any kind and the idle speed should be 600 rpm in drive, wheels chocked, parking brake on.

Must have been combination of old and/or regular gas. Tank was halfway full and I've hardly driven it since I've bought it. Before filling up with, it would take 3 or 4 tries of cranking 10+ seconds including pumping the gas. After fill up with 93 octane, it'll started after 1 try. Pumping the gas doesn't seem to make much difference now, but I'm just happy with the improvement. If you have problems with long cranking, might want to start with the basics. Good gas : )

Thanks MelWff.

Be sure the existing gas in the tank has not gone 'stale.'
You can tell by the awful smell if the gas has gone bad. Pump it out and replace with fresh gas. As stated above, 93 octane gas without any additive is the way to go.
