Default Rear End Noise

On 2 occasions during the past month, I have had strange clunking noises as if a gear or gears is not engaging. Both times, seperated by about a month, this noise occured after the car was stopped on a steep incline, the first time nose down the second nose up. The noise is evident only when I start moving. Put the clutch in and shift to second and the noise goes away. I have not been able to duplicate this on a level or slight incline. Also, I can go back to the same road as where the noise occured and I cannot duplicate it. Even though the noise is coming from the rear of the car, is there a chance I did not have 1st gear engaged all the way?

BTW, the first time the noise sounded like it was coming from the right rear, today it sounded like the left rear.

Any ideas anyone?

I would say u joints but under those conditions it may be the gears. If it was u joints it would happen most often when placed in gear. especially from a stop. Of course it could be some worn out bushings perhaps in the shocks, leaf spring, or control arms.

I would check the U joints too. I think if the gears were the problem then you'd hear it all the time.

Also check the biscuit in front of the differential.

Biscuit? the rubber bushing between the frame rail and the tounge of the differential?
