I bought my 72 vette a year ago. The guy never mentioned any power steering problems but it seem to start squealing as soon as i started driving it. i originally thought that it was the belt and tightened both the power steering and alternator belt and seemed to go away for awhile. Then i noticed leaking and put a piece of cardboard down and low and behold fluid was puking out. I don't know if it's when i start it up or ongoing but as soon as i fill it it seems to go out by the time i get back.
Ok, so to make a short story long, WTF is going on and what is the best route to go - rebuild, new hoses, all the above or buy new?
I'd get under there and see if you can pinpoint what is leaking. Check all the hoses, check the valve and the cylinder. I'd rebuild the valve if it needed it, I have a video that'll show you how. The cylinders are best if you replace them with new, the rod is chromed and over time the seal will wear a spot in the chrome. Once this happens replacing the seal is useless.

Thanks, I have seen some of your posts and was hoping you would reply
I had a mechanic buddy look under there and he mentioned the seals go out but he hasn't returned so I guess I've got to do the obvious and get my lazy butt underneath there and actually look. I'll fill it and wipe all the hoses off and fire it up.
I'll report back on my findings.
One guy on a post mentioned getting a new pump, borgsen or something like that. What do you think of that idea?

ayesijuan, I have been selling Borgeson integral power steering boxes for seven years in Australia and have one in my 1974 L48 coupe. As others on this Forum have discovered, you will not look back when you make this upgrade to your car's 70 plus year old power assisted steering. If your pump does not leak, then all you need is a hose kit, the box, a rag joint and a drag link adapter to replace the control valve. Borgeson has all of these. Oh, and some AC Delco Power Steering Fluid. DO NOT USE ATF!!!
Give Jeff a call at Borgeson on 1-860-482-8283 or www.borgeson.com and tell him that aussiejohn sent you.
