Went out today to run some errands so I thought I may as well exercise my 72 coupe. Getting ready to leave the parking lot and shift level was hung up. I could not get it to change gears. As luck would have it, it was hung up in second gear and I was able to drive the 4 miles home and get her back in the garage. I just came out from under the car. I was able to get all the levers back in neutral position. I started the car and very carefully put it through reverse and all 4 forward gears. The shift mechanism is original and obviously loose. Anybody have any experience rebuilding the linkage with the kits available? I have average mechanical ability, have replaced the clutch, radiator, shocks, carb etc, so I'm not afraid to give it a try. The other option is to go with a Hurst Shifter, but that gets me away from keeping her original. Thoughts?
I tried a Hurst for a while and decided it felt flimsy. And mine was made right here in this country. I went back to a newly rebuilt factory shifter.
Be aware they are mounted differently. I think the Hurst was mounted to the tranny and the factory is chassis mounted. You should also be aware that the factory has an alignment slot to get the linkage positioned correctly. You might just want to try that first for the easy way out as pulling the shifter is a royal pain.

Did you rebuild yours or buy a rebuilt shifter? If you rebuilt it, how difficult was it?
If your rod ends and levers are worn this is one of the few bargains in the corvette world. If your shifter is all right this is worth the money. I used it and it fits perfect and removes the slop.

Local shop rebuilt it but it really doesn't look all that hard once it is out. My rebuild included the shifter proper internals. Linkage is just remove and replace, pretty easy.

Thanks. Guess I'll order the kit and rebuild what I have.
