Default LT1 camshaft

I'm going to replace the radical hydraulic cam that was put into our 72 LT1. I perfer to go original, and would like the specs on the original cam. Crane Cams has "blueprinted" factory cams, and they show a 330 HP 350 cam. I want to make sure this is the same as the factory. The other possibility I had in mind is the 282S from Comp Cams. The engine now has headers and a Double Pumper Holley, and I'm not sure yet whether I'll keep these parts. I want to make the car a nice original looking driver, but I'm okay with some changes. Any suggestions?

Specs for 71 cam same as 70. I replace my original with crane(what you will get if you buy from chevy) and it works great. 242int/254ex duration with 459in/485ex lift or 435/459lift if you subtract valve lash. I also considered the comp cams 282s and might still use to compare. Good luck.

I would really consider the 282S or something like it. The original LT1 cam has a lot of duration with a fairly mild lift. The modern cams are much better. Better lift with slightly less duration. Still get that solid lifter sound and the lope from the duration but a lot of extra pull. I have the 292S and it really goes from 3500 up to 7000. If you don't want to spin it that high teh 282s would be a great choice. The LT1 cams are 30 years old and a lot has changed from them.

I agree with Gordon, while the original LT1 cam is an excellent cam, the newer designs will make more power. The appearance of the DP is very similar to the original carb except for the vacuum secondary canister. With the air cleaner on, I don't think anyone would know the difference. However, real LT1's are some of the most valued C3's so, if resale is in your plans, having the correct pieces, included or installed, would benefitial. I'd suggest enjoying the car in whatever dress pleases you but keep an eye out for bargains on original items just to have.

Thanks guys. I don't plan on selling it, but you never know what can happen in the long run. I do want the solid lifter sound...would you say the idle lopes of the stock cam and the 282S are similar???
What I guess I want is the idle to sound stock. But I figured the newer design cams would be better.

If you are interested in the real thing, I bought an orig LT-1 cam from Chev about 10 years ago - never install, that I will part with.
Also, Engle Cams in Santa Monica sells a nice solid lifter cam that has good lift .489" & 236 deg @ .050" with 112 lobe sep.
I would go with that over the Comp Cams model.
Note: Engles web site is down now. Drop me an email & I'll get the #

[Off Topic] Greg - Nice website. When will you have pics of the '72 on it (matches mine, remember)?
