Currently my '77 is set up as a dual with 2 cats and monza mufflers. I plan on adding Dynomax headers soon. Now, the fun part is that my vette is now emissions exempt. Should I remove the cats when I add the headers? Any other exhaust recommendations? Any idea of performance gains with the headers/cat free exhaust on a stock L48?
Your car may be exempt from emissions testing but it is not exempt from having the emissions equipment on it. You will find that reputable shops won't work on your car because if the Feds come in and find them working on a car without the required emissions they can be fined up to $10,000.
I have true dual on mine on a stock 1977 L48. I put the dual cats on mine with a couple of flowmasters. http://home.attbi.com/~jchadwick/exhaust.htm. I don't think I really got any improvement out of mine, though I have to admit that I love the sound, quite simply because the flow out of the 2 1/4 inch pipes with the high flow cats and mufflers more than meets the needs of the stock car. Too much flow and you can lose bottom end torque, an area where the stock L48 is already deficient.
CHICKEN (LOL).........do you have ANY idea how many emissions illegal cars there are in this country? I am a Government Certified Disabled Veteran of Vietnam who really couldn't care less whether my Antique Vette is emission certifyable or not......The government bastards owe me at least that much!!!!! :mad
I don't disagree with you. I just wanted to point out a potential problem. I debated taking mine off but came to the conclusion that I'm just mechanical enough to get myself in trobuble and need help, good Vette shops are hard to find and I didn't want to be precluded from using one.
Hey there Captn': I think you'll do just fine in the HP department with the high flow cats left on. As stated above, shops will shy away from working on your car without cats. High flow cats don't choke your stock motors exhaust enough for you to worry about a few lost horse power, and you won't stink up the garage. You'll notice an increase in HP when you install headers though!! My motors built, and I ran it without an exhaust for a while. Then installed hi-flow cats and flowmaster40's. It' still is plenty fast!!! By the way, here in Illinois....no one.... I mean NO ONE would work on my exhaust without cats!!!!
Good Luck
