Cruising in my 74 350 Corvette yesterday, I was abouyt 20 miles down the road and crusing at 60 when the engine started to cut in and out. RPM on the Tach would drop from 2500 RPM down to about 500 and then surge back to 2500. It did this constantly for a couple of miles and then settled back into a steady 2500 RPM. Needless to say I headed right home with no problem untill I was aproching the house and started to do it again. Mt first thought was fuel pump but it would cough or backfire every once in a while and now I'm not sure if I'm looking at timing, carberator, or fuel pump. Anyone have any ideas???
Thanks
Lefty
Fuel pump or fuel filter, if your Q-jet still has the little bronze element right inside the carb, it could be the problem. A lot of people pull them out and throw them away, I don't recommend that, but at least change it.
Also change your cartridge filter. If it repeats the missing, then start looking for fuel pump problems.
Also check your oil right after you come back from drive, if it is higher than normal and or you smell gas when you sniff the dip stick, you could have a leaking diaphram and gas is leaking into the crankcase.
i had the same problems last week . turned out that water infultrated my accel super coil and corroted it badly. i faced the same simptons you are having and was very much confused. as soon as i took the coil apart i know that was the problem . $55 for a new super coil and my puppy is back on the road.
