Default Trouble Shifting

Hi All...

I have a 1979 Corvette that has been off the road for over 10+ years....got it running and it is doing well but now i have made some observations and need some thoughts.

I have a 4 speed manual with a hurst shifter.

Sometimes to get into first gear it just wont go and i have to go back to neutral and take my foot of the clutch and then push the clutch and it will go into gear.

Sometimes 2nd gear is finnicky and it doesn't want to go.

I generally need to go into second gear before putting it into reverse otherwise it will grind.

Lastly, it seems like it is harder work shifting gears than it needs to be.

Any thoughts to this and what I should consider looking at?

Thanks in advance!

I would look at the clutch to start with. Adjustment first. If no help then I might think about a rusty flywheel and pressure plate. If the clutch released the first time you tried it then the disc had not rusted to the flywheel which is good.

So I should see about getting the clutch adjusted? When doing that, should it be easy to diagnose exactly whats wrong?

It also couldn't hurt to check the gear oil level in the transmission while you are at it. If it is low, it can't hurt to go ahead and replace it all at this time.

Welcome to the Corvette Forum, I think you will find it one of the most useful tools in your Corvette tool box. Also, you may find that adding a location, even a general location in your profile will generate additional helpful responses to you questions.

Good luck... GUSTO
