Default Windshield Wiper Issue

Hello all,

I have a 1975 Coupe. I'm having some issues with my wind shield wipers and thought I would ask the forum.

Question 1: When I move the slider on to low the wipers just barely move up (about 1") then go back down. If I move the slider to High they usually work, very quickly, sometimes they just do the same thing. Also once when I moved them slider to off they kept doing their little 1" dance until I shut off the car and then restarted it. Does this seem like a switch issue or a wiper motor issue?

Question 2: The two wipers frequently run into each other on the down stroke in the middle of the windshield. If I get out an move one they will start going again. But frequently run into each other. Is there a way to adjust their timing or should I change out the passenger wiper to be a smaller size to avoid this?

I'd ask you??? How long have you owned your '75 AND is this a new issue that has started when they worked properly before?.Are the blades the correct ones?..DO attend to the proper adjustment of the wiper mech anism and location of the blades on the posts..Wilcox has that part done right for you if you have basic tool skills and can follow directions..THERE are some obvious grease-lube points on the mechanicals which can be seen simply with hood open..Clean that whole area well while you have the hood up..Jim

I've owned it for 2 months. Never used them before this weekend. Got caught outside in a freak drizzle. Anyways had the problems listed in original post. I will adjust the wipers per the comments above, thank you for that. However I'm not sure that will solve my first question, them not working on the low setting.

You might first clean the wiper storage are after opening the hood..Then remove the entire wiper blade down to the posts. Then try the switch on low and high and see IF the posts are responding properly to the switch..

I tried several different sets of wiper blades on my '78 and until I finally got the more expensive blades by Bosch..the blades chattered a bit in operation.
IF the posts are rotating-reversing properly at both speeds, lube the mech lightly and then get new blades properly for that car year..
The adjustment stuff is fairly simple once you determine that you have correct blades all is clean-lubed and the switch is doing it's thing..Take a look at the loop wire stop that the blades rest upon when wipers are off also, sometimes theat simple critter gets damaged or not fastened properly..Jim

as a note, Wilcox has the rep wiper switch in stock for about 30.00..
quite possibly any good parts house would have the switch locally also..
i haven't got up behind the dash to replace one but looks fairly simple..Jim

Default Hi again.

Trico wiper blade #16-2 are low profile and are the correct length and fit the attachment points.

The wiper motor and the wiper switch must be grounded.
The ground for the wiper motor (black wire) joins the heater fan motor and ends at a starter or bell housing bolt.

The switch gets its ground from the bezel unless the bezel is cracked.
Attach a good ground to the switch and see what happens.

Sounds like the switch. Try the willcox bench test to test it in all modes while still installed.

Bench test the motor.. Just follow the instructions posted above.. but leave it in the car and remove all wires from the motor... Then use the bench test video and run jumpers for the test. Take the bell crank nut off so the wipers won't work too.

If the motor works per the bench test the issue is probably the wiper switch.

This may seem like a very broad question to ask, but I need some clarity here.
I've removed everything from the inside of my 81, painted what could be salvaged, bought new what needed to be replaced, and what was my biggest concern was replacing the dash wiring harness. I've even purchased all new screws, and even down to acorn nuts on the seat hinges.
Realistically, barring no major issues, what should I be looking at price wise to have the shop who is painting the car, put the interior back in? I'm not putting the A/C back in, because all the parts that should've been in the engine compartment for it had been removed when I bought it. The engine is not original either.
I'm looking at $15K to paint, and $6K to put this back together.
For an 81, I'm way past the point of diminishing returns, and I'll probably never sell this car anyway. It's my last Vette, but I want it to be right.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. This car will be just used to cruise in on the weekends, weather permitting.

I just checked my car and the upper nut goes all the way down to the black, are you sure you don't have a booger'd up thread on one or the other.?
