OK, here we go, I have been performing an body off restoration on my 79 for three years. Last Saturday, I finally got to start the engine. Bored and Stroked, new headers, and very proud. When I put the TH350 Tranny in gear, I have no drive. Yesterday I put the back end on blocks and ran the transmission forward and reverse through all the gears, works fine. Set the car back down and have no power only creeps about 5 miles an hour. I thought the plates might be stuck together, but I guess not. I have cleaned and blown out the Modulator valve, cleaned the vacuum line to the Transmission, replaced all the fluid. I did not clean the transmission filter, and I have not set the engine timing with a light, just by ear. I just wondered if anybody had some advice or a logical progression of checks I can perform. The transmission was operating flawlessly when I pulled it two years ago. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Did you fill the torq convetor full of fluid before reintalling it? I am not very fimiliar with auto but read in previous threads that you need to do this you will have problems similar to yours. Did you recheck your fluid level?
A lot of things can go bad when an automatic sets idle for a few years. I've seen this happen before with a 63 'vette with a powerglide. about 30 years ago a buddy of mine bought a 63 splitwindow from a widow. The car had sat for 3 or 4 years, her son had gotten it started, but the Powerglide didn't work, it did the same thing your car is doing. My buddy towed it home, dropped the pan and cleaned the the filter and pan. When he started it back up it worked fine.
I'd suggest dropping the pan and replacing the filter. Since you have a 79 I assume that you have a TH350, doesn't the TH350 have a TV cable? If so have you hooked it back up and adjusted it?
Other than that I am clueless. Good Luck!
