So, I'm driving today home from work. There has been a strange "grunting" noise from the driver's side rear. When I was sitting at a light, there was a funny smell and I smelled it again when I got out at home. Everything also seemed warmer than it should be down there.
Is this a wheel bearing going bad? How do I tell? How do I fix it? Help? This is my daily driver...
Grunting? Could be a lot of things. First thing to do is get the tire off the ground and see if there's any play when you grab the tire on either side and pull at it. Could be a parking brake shoe hanging. Could also be your rear end--when my '78 needed a fluid change, it made sort of grunting noise, esp. in slow turns, and it seemed to be coming from just one wheel, though that wouldn't explain the heating up and burning smell.
Possibly a brake hung up, either parking or rear disc. You want to get it up and examined, because if it is a bearing seizing you could break the outer shaft while driving. Not a pretty thought. In my experience bearings usually make a noise before going out, but not always. Parking brake hung up is common, the smell is unique if you've smelt burning brakes before you'll recognize it. Good Luck

Smelling smoke?? Hmmm...it wouldn't be the tires...would it?!?! ahhaha  Just kidding
but seriously, I had this EXACT same ordeal with my truck. It felt like it was lacking in power. Got out, extreme heat coming from the wheel well. Parking brakes had hung on and would not release.
