The driver's (1978 model) side automatic window only goes to the top if i open the door;
the window goes all the way down no problem. When it comes time to bring it up it goes up i would say 85% then gets stuck. But if i just open the car door (just a bit doesnt need to be fully opened) and try to bring it up, it will go all the way up.

anyone know what the issue is here?
Thanks alot !
Has it been like this since you got it?Yes it is a combination of window and weatherstripping..You'll note the pillar side WS has a metal piece securing it a couple inches from the tip.Glass needs to rise on the ouside of that..A bit of silicone on the weatherstrip in that area may help..Jim
The only thing that i still don't get is how come if i open the door it goes all the way on the top?
How does the door being open circumvent the problem?
It can be hard for the window to slide on the rubber.The motor does not have enough power to push it up .when the door is open there is less resistence.
When this happens, it means parts of the mechanism and associated are beginning to wear. Sometimes you can adjust this back to acceptable, but then you see a fit issue show up somewhere else...closing the door with the glass up, wind noise, etc.

Because the glass isn't rubbing the weatherstripping as tightly with the door open. Look at how the glass fits against the rubber and you'll see. I assume by "automatic", you mean "power". The 78's had no automatic feature that I'm aware of.
