In some of the fairly recent u-joint posts, I've seen some state that there have been a lot of threads about Brute Force u-joint failures. Well, I searched the C3 forum and could find two; one had a zerk (??) and I think the other broke on a car with slicks.
Please tell me your story of a broken Brute Force U-Joint or point me to some of these many threads.
When I replaced my U-joints it was pretty much a universal opinion on the forum that the only two choices were Brute-Force and Spicer. I chose Brute Force because they could be bought locally without the grease zerk, I could not find Spicer without a grease Zerk.
In my opinion Brute Force U-Joints are the best off the shelf U-joints you can buy, with Spicer a close second.
Any U-joint can break - zerk or no zerk - if manhandled well enough - I would choose a spicer solid joint over a Brute force (which would be my second choice) Right now I'm acutally running both - my Drivers side 1/2 shaft is Brute Force equipped and the passenger is all Spicer -
Wish I had pictures of the 2 -
Put a Spicer next to a Brute force joint and you will wonder how Brute Force got its name as the Spicer makes it look like Casper Milquetoast
i have been running the brute force u-joints for four or five years now. i haven't had a failure yet, only because i don't give them the chance. as hard as i drive my car, it goes on jackstands every winter and all the shafts come out and all the joints get inspected/replaced (along with bearings getting greased, brake fluid changed, yadda, yadda, yadda). i have found that the brute force joints only last me about two years before they begin to gaul the trunion and caps. i haven't had to pay for new joints since the first replacements because brute force had a lifetime warranty. i was informed last winter, that is no longer the case (i'm sure i'm partly to blame :jester ) now that i will have to buy u-joints again i will try the spicers and see if i can notice a difference.

Oh yeah. I installed Brute Force U-joints on both my halfshafts and then I read of all the horror stories... since my car wasn't back on the road yet anyway, I had a shop pull those and install Spicers (hey, I didn't feel like doing the same job twice). The Spicers have a much beefier appearance than the Brute Force U-joints.
Tony's Corvette Shop in Gaithersburg, MD (where I had the work done) only recommends and uses Spicers.
