Well, I have a couple of ideas for a new exhaust for the car. First up is a bolt on setup from stainless works. They make a header back system that will bolt up just fine. Its a traditional muffler, chambered type.
Option two is something like an undercar chamber to give it a sidepipe type sound, or glass packs.
Option three, a completely custom build by a performance shop. Go all out and have strait pipes, with an electric baffle that vents through a quiet exhaust.
What have you all done? I want the car to sound pretty mean, but not be embarrassing or get me a ticket.
First to simplify things go with a cross member to have a pass under exhaust. Quit messing with all the bends of a pass through the holes
then have a muffler shop weld up some 3 inch to the connection at the headers straight back to an H or X pipe and out through some 3 inch in and out race mufflers. It gives a powerful sound
I agree with replace the cross member with something from BowTie Overdrives or similar and do a custom set up. I have the Magna-Flow set up with the x pipe and it's compromised by having to fit through the cross member. The Magna-Flow sounds good but fit poorly. It hangs too low at rear. Three different shops worked on it to get it to fit better. All said custom build would have been better. If I had it to do over I would have custom built dual 3 inch with x pipe & BowTie cross member.
http://www.sandersonheaders.com/ I like sanderson shorty headers for the street. For a street car with less than 300 hp I don't think I would go with long tube headers or change over the crossmember for the straight thru exhaust. That would be best ,but a lot of money and may not be needed for a lower hp motor.Sanderson headers ,with custom pipes too a large single pipe[ 3-4inch] in the factory postion .Then split into dual pipes in to borla or magna flow mufflers .A lot of what I would do would depend on cost and what a good muffler shop would be willing to do.A 1979 is suppose to have a cat .How much do you want to spend?
Well. We are in luck. I actually installed a tubular crossmember years ago when the project started. The engine should be making roughly 450hp+ and about 500 torques.
I will take it to the exhaust shop and see what they recommend. Mind posting a video of yalls setups?
I called for an appointment and drove 8 miles down to the muffler shop with just uncapped headers. That was with my hot rodded 355 ci and I had them do the 3 inch system with 3 1/2 inch in and out race mufflers
