A little back ground. I have an Edelbrock 1406, 600 cfm carb on my basicily stock 350. Also have an Autometer air/fuel gauge in the clock position. The gauge is a 20 LED. Counting from the left the 16-20 LED's are rich indicators.
It read at the 18 area at idle and at low rpm cruising. This meant to me that at low rpms the car was running off the transfer slots.
Two days ago, about 100 miles ago, I took the top plate off the carb and drilled the 2nd air bleed on each side to 060 inch. After everything was back together the idle picked up and I was able to turn the idle adjust screws in 1/2 turn. They're now 1 turn out as opposed to the manual 1 1/2 turns.
The throtle response is crisper and the gas gauge is moving down slower. The air/fuel gauge is now reading in the 16-17 area.
This is an early indication only, but it sure is promising as a good move. I'll post more as time goes on.
I have the same carb, i'm not sure what your refering to about drilling, i just went and bought leaner meters/jets and installed them. I have been having problems with the carb though, roughe idle, dies when a hard right turn is taking, and sometimes when stopping...that is not good. :cuss
I am thinking aboub getting a 670 Holley Streetavenger, these any good?
The springs that control the metering rods are extremly sensitive. Make sure that you try them ALL ! before you resort to jetting changes and drilling holes in the carb. The idle circuit shoudl only need about a turn maybe a turn and a half to provide a nice idle. I was ready to get rid of the edelbrock carb, but it has turned out to be a great unit, once I got it tuned in properly.
I'm running the same carb also and what I found is they are jetted way to large on the primary for my application. I had to reduce the primary jets to 89 vs the 98s that come with it. I have had the carb for over 7 years and only a couple of rebuilds....and love it.
The Street Avenger is a great carb...I know several people who have them and it's the only Holley I know of that you can just take it out of the box and not have to mess with it to get it running correctly. Personally, I think the Edelbrock is a boat anchor, but to each their own!
