Default Wiper switch replacement on a 1978

I am in the process of replacing the wiper switch on my 1978. In so doing, the stainless retainer like spring fell out of position. This piece almost looks like a longer bent feeler guage. That said, I am trying to get an understanding on where it fits back on both the switch and the back of the dash. It seems that the switch should slide into the metal on the top of the switch to help retain it from being pushed back with a screw that runs into the bottom bracket of the switch. It also seems it should mount to the dash in a groove and a spring tension application. I can’t see all the way up there and it appears I will need to pull the tach and speedo to get it back in place. Do you have any diagrams, photos and or advise you can share?

If needed, I can take some photos to share.

Thanks for any assistance

Some photos will help. What's the need for the switch needing to get replace if I might ask?
