Default Adding Power Steering Fluid

Seems like every time I try to top off power steering fluid ('77) I overfill it. Does anyone have a good feel for how much fluid I should add, like what it takes to bring the level from the full cold mark to full hot mark for instance? 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, ??

Check it cold. If you see it on the marks on the dipstick you are OK. There needs to be room at the top for the fluid to expand as it gets hot. No need to add more.

Yeah, fixing the leak's a great idea. Love to. This'll be the third control valve in a year and a half. That's why I ask. Kinda hard to know how much to put in when it doesn't even show on the dipstick though.

Adding power steering fluid is awkward as the cap comes out very close to belt-pulley..I made up a small p/s fluid dispenser using a 6oz turkey push-plunger baster injector with a piece of rubber hose vacuum hose attached.I SIPHONED fluid from the ps fluid container and then gradually added the fluid to the power steering pump until I GOT the level to the full-cold spot on the dipstick..IF one overfills it..he can siphon some out by pulling the plunger out a bit to an ounce or so until cold level is correct..I'm not sure what the volume difference is between full cold and full hot marks..but one cound fill cold..then add fluid to the full hot mark and find out simply enough..THEN pull that amount out.Jim

You tried doing the rebuild yourself? Not a bad job reference Willcox's video.

Didn't try to rebuild the control valve myself, had a local (reputable) shop replace it. Apparently the rebuilt units are problematic. They're replacing them under warranty but it's still annoying. Going back for the 3rd try in a couple of weeks.
My experience topping off yesterday indicates it's only a couple or three ounces between cold and hot on the dipstick. Easy to overfill (which I've done more than once).
Taking the cap off gets easy after you do it 20 or 30 times. I just use a funnel with a long semi flexible neck to add fluid.
