I got a great deal on a used Hurst Competition Plus shifter from a freind,so i bought it.
When i got it in the garage i thought i would clean, paint it up,and restore it to its former glory.
I picked it apart.
I never could have thought how much stuff there is in a shifter assembly, springs, shims and other funny lookin stuff..I almost gave up.
After a while i got it back together.
Now to the question. The shifter assembly didnt have a "stick",and i wonder if someone could tell me what kin of "stick" came with it from the factory,or if theres a better one, thats more like the original piece.
There are a number of different sticks. Corvettes never came with Hurst shifters so there is no stock shifter. There are replacement shifters that look very much like a stock shifter. I have one in my car. My shifter came from Corvette Central and I know they will sell just the shifter arm. Some of the other vendors might also have this shifter arm. Most of the other arms from Hurst are quite long and would look funny in a Corvette.
I purchased my 69 with a HURST shifter installed. The shifter itself is a flat, maybe 3/4" stick with HURST engraved on each side and a white plastic ball. If someone can tell me how to attach a picture to a message, I'll be happy to put it up for you.
I had a guy tell me one time that he used to take the stock shifter handle and weld it on the bottom of a Hurst to have the look of stock but have the better shifting of the Hurst. Sounded like a pipe dream to me but maybe it's possible.
Almost all of the major Vette parts vendors sell the stock style shift lever for Hurst shifters. They bolt right on, and the only thing that is different is that the fake reverse lockout doesn't work. They are about 90 bucks (expensive, just like everything else!).
Hi BB: I was just back reading some old threads and saw yours about Hurst shifters. The Hurst lever for a Corvette is fairly short. Hurst has many diferent length and shape levers for their shifters . I know speed shops in the US can get the different levers from Hurst. It was mentioned that a fake stock appearing lever is available for the Hurst. I have one of these levers on my Hurst Competion Plus shifter, it is had to tell the car has a aftermarket shifter and it works great. I just measured the overall length of the Hurst lever that came out of my 73, it is 11 1/2" from ball to end that is bolted to shifter. Chuck D
