1971 Corvette, I have a Pioneer Super/Tuner cassette car stereo in the car now and would like to install new speakers in the dash and kick panels. The book that came with the stereo says the speakers recommened to use must be high-powered types possessing minimum rating of 25 W and impedance of 4 to 8 ohmns. What brand and size speakers should I use to get the best sound.
I have Kenwood eXcelon 4"x6" in the front, they are very good speakers and go for only a $100, only beacuse of their small size. You can still use the stock mounting brackets in the dash too. If your installing them yourself, the best way to do the drive side is to loosen up the drive side dash and the whole dash pad, lift the dash pad as high as possible, remove the old speaker and bracket, attach the new speaker to the bracket then reinstall as one piece, since it's pretty tight in there and this way you'll only have to put in a couple of screws. It worked for me. Some low pass filters may also be a good idea, since these speakers weren't made for bass. Good Luck.
I got 4 of the Clarion SRC4694 speakers. Two in the dash and two in the kick panels. They're a 4 inch speaker w/a separate tweeter mounted on a 4x6 plate. They sound much crisper than any 4x6 speaker I listened to before and they fit right in the stock dash location after drilling a couple of holes in them. They have holes everywhere but none of them lined up right for mounting. Anyway, I got those and a 8" Bazooka powered sub in the luggage compartment and the whole system is simple to put together and sounds killer.
Man those clarions looks sweet... I saw the suggestion about the dash pad above, how did everyone else do it?
In my 81 it looks like I could get up in there with a stubby screwdriver and unscrew the speakers, possibly lifting them out with some coathanger arrangement and then the reverse for putting them back in. I haven't checked to see what length of wires I have in there so it may be rough working with the wiring if they are short.
i dont have any screws in mine nor does it look like i need them. the kappas that i have though dont seem to fit with the speaker cover over them. i plan on shaving the speaker sides a little bit to let it drop down that fraction of an inch to fit flush.
hands down the clearest choice for the money. i got a GREAT deal from http://www.thezeb.com all new items with full warrentys non-refurbished at good prices.
Thank you for all the info guys. I would like to know if the Clarion speakers will fit in my 71. I don't know if a 73 has the same speakers as a 71. Would like to hear from guys with 71s and hear what they have in there Vettes.
Mid-America and Zip both list the same dash replacement speaker for 70-82 and Zip also lists the same dash speaker mount bracket for 70-82 also.
I did have to drill holes in the speaker's plate on the Clarions to get them mounted in the dash because none of the pre-drilled holes were the right pattern for the mount bracket.
make sure you measure the depth of the speaker hole. i bought some Cerwin Vega Stealth series a couple years back, and they are arround 2.5" deep. the grill wouldnt fit over the speaker because of the heater duct. i actually have the cerwins in my blazer now, and the grille is the same way on those. i really dont know why cerwin called em stealth series. they sound great though. especially because i have em amped with an alpine V12 amp.
anyone heard of diamond audio? there mids and highs are hands down the best for the money. they sound better than MB Quarts and cost less. we used to sell em at the car audio shop i used to work at. we installed em in a lamborghini diablo were "Money was not an issue" they sounded great.

When you run 4 speakers in the front how are they wired? Are they all on the front channel? Thanks, Craig
I set the ones I put behind the kick panels up on the rear channels. I don't really know if setting it up that way effects how things sound. Basically I was just trying to hide everything and keep the cabin of the car from looking like a rolling stereo and behind the kick panels looked like a good spot to hide some speakers. :)
