Default Will mufflers fit?

Hi Guys,

I'd like to fit new mufflers on my '69 350 but I'm not sure if they'll fit. Hooker Aero Chambers are over 10" wide. What's the maximum width that can be fitted? Will Magnaflows fit at 14 X 9 X 4? The ones on my 'Vette are some non-standard size so I can't be sure if new ones will fit. The existing mufflers are too quiet and I'd like to have a decent deep V8 rumble, but I've read many reports now on owners who bought mufflers and then hated the deafening drone on the highway. I have Hooker headers with 2 and a half inch pipes. Any advice?

Thanks, Barry.

I just installed the 14" Magnaflows on my 71-454. Yes, they fit. But, they're pretty loud. I don't notice any drone on the highway, just around town. But I also drive with the rear window out, so that would make a difference. I don't believe that a relatively short muffler can provide a quiet sound. There's always going to be a compromise.

cant say about the fit on a 69 but on my 82 mufflers over 10 inch wide don't fit well.

Thanks Tim and Terry - I have a pair of 9" Magnaflows so I'll fit them. I better not buy the Hookers if 10" is too wide. Regards, Barry.

OEM muffler body is about 17.5" x 9.5" x 5.5". At 9.5" wide it's fairly close to the 255/60-15 tire on my 69. Right now I have OEM mufflers on my car, but already bought both Magnaflow 14" x 8" x 5" (part#12226 brushed finish) and 18" x 8" x 5" (part #14256 polished finish) for future use. Both sizes will fit comfortably. 18" will be a bit quieter than 14".

Thanks cwwhk,
Since I'd already bought a pair of Magnaflows which are 9" wide, I could get them fitted now I know the width is okay. The part number is 11226, so they should be much the same sound as the 12226. I probably would have gone for the 12226 if I hadn't already got these. Regards, Barry.

Let us now how you like the sound once the new mufflers are installed. Both of our '69 catback systems use the 4x9x14" size mufflers, so there should be no fitment issues in the hands of a capable exhaust shop!

Our 5x8 or 4x9 unit are most commonly used for upgrades since they give a nice bump in volume, but not too much to where the car is obnoxious. The part numbers below are what we would recommend. These use a 2.5" inlet/outlet diameter, but we also offer them in other sizes as well.

#11226 - 4x9x14 (satin)
#14326 - 4x9x14 (polished)
#12226 - 5x8x14 (satin)
#14226 - 5x8x14 (polished)

If you have any questions about the sizing, please let us know!

"'69 catback systems" - does anyone need a catback system for a '69?

Default fitting magnaflows

That's good I know the 14x9x4 will fit. I've got Hooker headers, 2.5" pipes, but in the past the pipes had been reduced to 2" to get through the midway tunnels and then back to 2.5" Also the mufflers were offset/offset instead of centre/offset so apart from an unsightly gap on each side at the rear, a piece of the muffler had to be cut away and rewelded to clear the spare tyre carrier! Another problem was the pipes were so low they hit every speed bump on the road.

I'm putting the car in on Tuesday to get all this fixed, and since I already have the mufflers (#11226) I'll get these fitted and hope I like the sound. I heard a guy at a show who had chambered mufflers which sounded great, but apart from having difficulty getting them and already having the Magnas, I couldn't be sure if the noise would be too much at cruising speed. I'll let the forum know what I think of them next week and thanks for the info.

Default new exhaust fitted

Hi Forum, I said I'd write back when the new system was fitted. I took it to Tony Banks, Leeds, England, which may be of interest to UK members. They corrected the mistakes the previous company had made - pipes too low, reduced from 2.5" to 2" where they pass through the tunnels, and they fitted the Magnaflows which I had been told wouldn't fit. The reason the first company reduced the pipes to 2" was they didn't know the gearbox mounting was worn and it caused the gearbox to drop. A new mounting was fitted and the 2.5 pipes were fine.
The mufflers, part number 11226, were fitted with no trouble. The sound is great - a deep throaty sound, but not so much that it would cause an unpleasant drone. Good rumble at low speeds, and an exciting roar at high speeds. I'm happy with the system now and I'm pleased I had Hooker headers fitted a few months ago.
Regards, Barry.
