Default Can I run open headers?

Help. I wanna try and squeeze a little more power from my '79 Vette. This Sunday will be my final chance to drag race for the winter. I've done a few 14.4's but would like to try a few things with the timing light and was considering opening up the headers. I've been looking at it but think when I open up the bolts at the collectors, is there a way to roll the exhaust to one side or the other. It doesn't look good because the true duals are running through the holes in the crossmember. Does anyone do this ever or would the gains be worth the work involved. Thanks for the help! :seeya

Yes, where I come from, we called that gapping your headers. Spacing the header flange from the collector even 1/2" will more than double your exhaust flow. Open headers would probably add about 20-25 horsepower to your car over typical headers & mufflers combinations on a 350 gross horsepower engine that you state you have. Gapping the headers from 1/2 - 1" will probably get you all of that.

Have fun and good luck! Make sure you drive with your windows open if you do this. Carbon Monoxide will turn you red for reasons than other than embarrassment.

Washers will work fine; but, takes a bit longer to take bolts completely off to do it. 3 short lengths of tubing cut lengthwise to allow fitting over existing bolts when loosened makes it a bit easier. Simplest way that Bubba suggests is to loosen and insert 3/4" bolt crosswise between the header and exhaust pipe, and tighten flange pinching it in place. Be careful not to deform the sealing surface of the flange when you do.
