I have been looking at trans coolers and have decided to buy the (Long) Tru Cool LPD #4590 trans cooler. It has a 28,000 GVW and a 24,000 BTU rating. Will this cooler adequately keep the trans fluid cool for my application. I have a 2800-3000 stall converter in the th350. Is it best to install the cooler with the fittings facing horizontally or facing down?
johnt65:I am going with the stacked plate design of the tru cool. I will run lines directly to the cooler w/o fan. I do not have a temp gage (could be a good idea) in the pan. Where I live has mild winters and this cooler will allow thicker coolant to flow through the upper portion of the cooler until it reaches NOT. I'm planning on installing it on the radiator but was asking whether it be installed with the fittings facing horizontally or with them facing down. CraigH has his in an interesting location.

I needed a cooler that would fit in that area below my center grill on my 74. This will fit
The stacked plate design was a no-brainer for me.
Here's the thickness of the cooler as well as the shroud and Spal fan. Yes Spal and never look back.
A simple aluminum shroud. Can't stress the shroud part enough
Here's the spot I've picked out. I had to remove the spoiler and air dam to access the area
This gives you an idea of fitment
Here she is with everything back in place
For fan control. I have an inline n/o temp switch. Most evening and on cool days the fan won't even come on. When the temp here in Oklahoma approach 95 deg plus, the Spal fan gets to chime in on duties.
Very nice installation....with the Long coolers it does not matter if the inlet/outlet lines are horizontal or vertical. As I and others stated in your other post on this topic, fit the biggest cooler that will fit in the selected location. I run all my coolers stand alone since I don't want the radiator coolant raising the temp with a self regulated temp controlled Long coolers...either will work for you. 2 of my Long cooler installations are in cars that I use all year round with very frigid temps with zero issues. Unless you are driving your C3 in temps below 25 degrees, you should be fine. With my grand prix, below 25 degrees, the trans takes about 3 miles of driving before it reaches 88 degrees and the PCM allows OD to engage in the tranny...that is the only issue. Approaching 190,000 miles on the FWD crap 4T65E tranny in the GP...
