My concern is that the diff has been into twice. There is no telling what the pinion preload is now. If the diff was untouched and had no bearing noise then yes, changing just the seal is entirely feasible.

I would think it would be OK as long as the drip doesn't get worse. If the car is new to you though I would check the differential fluid level to make sure it is up. No telling how long it has been the way it is.

I just went through a pinion seal replacement on my 1980 this past spring. Without a lift, getting up to the front seal laying on your back is something I might have attempted as a 20 year old. This is a task that needs to be done correctly. I actually made my own driver to make sure the new seal went in straight. Yes, sealant on the splines is a must. Either do it on a lift or pull the diff.
