Default Rear wheel lug studs?

I've replaced my front lug studs. Very straightforward--hammer them out and remove them from the rear, then drive/press in new ones.

The rears are a little different. They drive out almost all the way OK, but there seems to be no place in back where you can grab them, pull them out and start new ones in.

Caliper/rotor/e-brake and all that nonsense have to come off or am I just not looking closely enough?

Is the spindle still installed? How are you going to press the new ones back in place? Pull them with a nut?

They will drive in. That is, if there's a place to pull out the old studs and start a new one without yanking the assembly off.

The Moroso studs lend themselves to this very nicely. Their knurl diameter is .480" and they drive in very solidly.

I ask the same question a couple of years ago and started a bit of a war of words.
It seems that some cars are setup in a mannor that allows the stud to be worked out while the hub is installed. My car, and many others, are not however. I even went so far as to use a shorter stud in an attempt to get a stud in place. Two of the studs had broken off flush and came right out when hammered from the hub, but the full length studs would have to be made of rubber to turn the corner in to place.
By all means give it a try, but if you can't work the stud in place just look at it as a opportunity to replace the rear wheel bearings :)

ttt is 'to the top'. Use to keep a topic going.
I paid my mechanic to do the rear studs. Still haven't gotten around to doing the front

Garg. I guess I'd better make some time this afternoon to take a really close look. The fronts were easy in that there was plenty of room to swap studs while everything was assembled. Piece of cake, actually. I'd rather not do the whole disassembly routine just to get some longer studs on there, but c'est la vie...

We just had to do mine today, but I'm not sure of the terminology so please bear with me...also not sure if your car is the same as mine. We drilled a hole in the shield to allow room to push the old ones out, and pull the new ones in. The mechanic sort of shimmed around the stud with a special tool to be able to tighten them up all the way so they seated, he did this by putting the lug nuts on and tightening them. I would think you could use washers. He said you have to pull the axle out if there isn't a notch to allow room, my car had the notch but the shield thing was in the way. He just drilled a hole and moved the wheel hub around to reach each one. Sorry if that doesn't help, I can ask him what all the parts are called...

i just cut my dust shield out all together. then again, my car sees about as much track time as street time and i haven't driven mine in the rain in about four years. of course, i drove my stock lug bolts out with the shield in place but there ain't no way anybody's vette is set up to install the 2-3/4" racing style lug bolts i replaced them with! :smash:

If you don't want to hack up the rotor dust shield, you need to push the spindle out about 1/4" so you can get the studs in and out. Of course this takes $pecial tools to push the spindle out and pull it back into place. That's how I did it, and it was mucho work. Rear 1/2 shaft needs to come out too.

Yup. I took a good long look at it last night and it looked like they may go in OK if I enlarge one of the windows in the dust shield. No-go. I gotta find a shop--I have neither the tools nor the skills to pull the rear hubs. :nonod:
