Re: Help with vin and engine numbers (HEARTBEATUSA)
If small block....
block casting #.... driver's side, rear of block, behind valve cover
date code..... same, or on passenger's side
stamp pad.... passenger's side in front of valve cover, near water pump
Re: Help with vin and engine numbers (HEARTBEATUSA)
starting in 57 the block stamp had a f or v for a flint block, and a t for tonawanda. the next 3 or 4 numbers designate date of build the last 2 or 3 are the suffix number and indicated the engine' use
Re: Help with vin and engine numbers (HEARTBEATUSA)
what the book says about '76 vin
fifth digit x=350/210hp, l= 350/180hp last 5 numbers 20245 is the build number. your car was likely assembled in Jan 76. dec build ended with 16696 jan ended with 20568 probably built the last week of January
Re: Help with vin and engine numbers (HEARTBEATUSA)
Those three numbers can tell most things about the motor. Post them and we can help.
For the heads, you'll need to remove the valve covers and read the casting # and date codes.
Re: Help with vin and engine numbers (4_inch_Bore)
block #3970010, and the heads #333882 and could you tell me what book you use as your reference?
thanks again

Re: Help with vin and engine numbers (HEARTBEATUSA)
The 3970010 block was used on a zillion Chevy products, 1968-79. Same with the 333882 heads, 1970-76.
If you are concerned whether your motor is original, you need to check the stamp pad and date codes.
