Default an Interior shop suggested a different insulation

we have all seen the threads with the fiberglass, the foam, whatever, this guy said he has had good luck with an insulation that is basically a heavy duty bubble wrap(won't pop) double sided with foil.. what do you all think?

That stuff will work fine in none traffic areas. Don't think it'll hold up in the footwells.

I just replaced the carpets in my 69 coupe and was very pleased with a roll of insulation that I picked up at a roofing shop. I called to ask if they had rolls of 1/4" insulation that I might use to insulate my car with. I expected the guy to laugh, but instead he asked, "What kind of car do you have?" I told him a 69 corvette and he said that he had just the thing I needed. He had recently done his own 68 corvette and he offered me a free roll of insulation. I drove to his home that night and he gave me a roll of gray wool insulation they use for industrial roofing projects.

To make a long story short, I removed the original rubber backed insulation, scraped the old insulation off the rubber pads, then layed the rubber pads on top of the new insulation and using them as a pattern, I cut around them. Using lots of spray adhesive, I glued the new insulation onto the floor. Since I had removed the console already, I cut the left over insulation into pieces and covered every inch of the floor including the transmission hump. I then glued the original rubber pads down onto the insulation. They layed down perfectly. Finally, I glued the carpets back in. Now that I am driving it again, the inside of the car is much cooler than before, especially around the transmission hump/shifter console.

Your mileage may vary.

Mark

I recently completely lined my undercarpet and tranny tunnel with the bubble type radiant barrier. Double layer in the foot wells. With the carpet back in, and the mats back in, I doubt there will be any popping of the bubbles. Only bubbles I popped is one or two on each side when I put my elbow directly on it when working on the tranny tunnel. Good improvement for $21 of material - before tax, of course! Interior much cooler, sound quieter also.

Where can you get this insulation? Does it effect the fit of the carpet? Do you have to glue it down first?

Keep us updated on the project. Pix please! I'd like to see what the insulation looks like. I'm already planning my winter projects, and carpet/insulation might be one of them.

I saw something that sounds like this bubble insulation at Home Depot.

I did mine with the foil bubble insulation years ago and it worked great. Thought I was Bubba when I did it but don't feel so bad since seeing how many others took the same route. It definitely helped on the interior heat and is very economical.

I used the foil bubble wrap everywhere but the floorboard. Where I felt feet might pop the bubbles. I used foil backed styrofoam, 3/8 thick. Bought both at Home Depot two years ago and it has definately made it cooler and no problems with it.

if you use the double foil insulation will the jute padding still fit under the carpet, or do you have to leave the jute out? :flag

Thanks for all of the great advice. I think I am going to try the Home Depot stuff. I will tell you how it turns out. A complete interior redo is on my list for this winter.

You can also go to your local carpet store that installs wall to wall carpet and buy their jute underlayment.
I just removed my heater core on my 68 coupe and while I was under the dash, I insulated everywhere with this jute (they called it synthetic jute) and a piec 6feet by 6 feet cost me $6.00. Easy to work with and held in place by 3M spray adhesive ($18.00) It is very dense and approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick, used it on console too and will use it when I replace interior carpet at end of project.

I left the jute padding out because it was building up too high. Even without the jute padding there were some fit issues with the parkingbrake/shifter console.I had to cut away some of the padding that the parking brake console sits against on the rear bulkhead before I could line everything up. Even so it was a tight fit.
