Default ignition key switch problems

This is a question concerning my 69 Camaro but I figured steering columns should be close to the same. I replaced the key switch and now when I installed new switch it will not return to lock position to remove key. It goes to the start, run and off but not acc. Looked up Jim Shea's paper and couldn't really find any help there. I wouldn't think the rod to ignition switch could have skipped a tooth or two but anything's possible. I tried to turn cam that engages rod to turn but it won't move backwards but will go to run position. Any ideas? Thanks

Does the column have a interlock system on it that locks the column when in Park? If so take a look at the lever at the bottom of the column that activates it and see if the cable is bound up or missing. You can see in the picture below where the locking arm is located on the Corvette... (at the forward end of the red cable in the picture below).

Forgot to mention it's a 4 speed and has a rod that comes from column to lock wheel when turned to off position but wheel if off now.

got it! After thinking more and looking at Willcox reply the collar that locks wheel in place was moved just enough to prevent key turning to lock position. moved collar and key removed easy-now to find a way to stabilize the collar so it can't turn. Thanks!

Is it jammed up?

The interlock shoves a rod into place in the lock collar pictured in J-1 below, this allows you to lock the column but if the lever is not moving then you won't be able to get the column in park.

The reason I say this, is that for the switch to seat it must line up with the key way shaft for the rack. The rack gear has a shaft that must pass into the back side of the ignition switch so I don't think that is your problem. It almost has to be something in the interlock system causing the issue. Email Jim Shea, his email is easy to find and see what he say's. He's the resident expert on columns and my go to guy when I have an issue I can't solve.
