Default 1977 starter trouble

I'm looking in to replacing my starter with an aftermarket gear reduction / high torque starter. I've got a 383 stroker in the car and planning to build it up more. Does anyone have experience with this style starter and if so what would you recommend. It's a street car so I want reliable and tough. Thanks all.

Just get a name brand not some off the wall one.Summit has a lot of them and you can read the reviews.

I have always used Powermaster mini starters. They are a bit expensive but have high torque for big compression and the quality is very good. Some are even clockable so you can rotate the starter body in the mount to clear headers or get it in the exact position you want.

I'm looking at the Powermaster 9612. It's got good reviews and it's not priced bad compared to some of the others.

You will need a metric 3mm hex wrench to clock the starter if it's required as it doesn't come in the box.

My other rides are a Wrangler and a Kawasaki so I'm good with metric tools. Thanks for the heads up. I should probably invest in some Loctite as well.

So far I like the Powermaster starter but after closer inspection the flexplate is in need of a dentist. I really didn't want to pull the trans out of the car but I suppose that will give me a chance to change the front seal as well as the flexplate and I ordered a trans pan with a drain plug so I suppose it's not all bad. Winters in Indiana aren't Corvette friendly anyway.

I frequently suffer from that condition. Years of owning beat-up old cars have taught me to replace as much as possible while major parts are on the bench.

The new flexplate is on along with a new starter and all new seals and gaskets on the trans. Only $500 paid to the transmission shop. Sadly the Powermaster starter was a failure so hopefully Jegs will at least give me credit for it. While under the car I noticed the radiator has a leak so it'll be next on the list.

What he said. I'm glad my big, ole, hunky starter went. I love my new mini. Rotating it was a plus.

Question for you experts...I wrapped my mini (hold the jokes) with a heat shield? Will dirt and moisture build and mess p the starter. My sidemount headers are right there.

A heat shield is a good idea, especially with close by headers. It will probably keep more dirt out than allow in and the only way moisture is going to affect it is if you drive off a dock. What kind of shield did you use with it?
