Alright,
I haven't posted on the forum in awhile but I'm back. I've been enjoying the Corvette except for one glaring problem. Whenever I tach it above 3100 rpm's something under the hood makes the most ungodly wailing noise. I've got it narrowed down to the belts, it has to be the belts. the vette has two. one for the water pump and altenator and the other for power steering. My question is, in order to figure out which belt it is, can I run the engine for 30 seconds or so with out the water pump altenator belt? Also, if there is anything I have over looked that could be making this noise I'd galdly appreciate if someone would point them out.

are you sure its a belt, and not one of the components?
if it is a bad belt might be easier to replace with new ones then see if problem disappears. if one belt is bad... the other belt might go with it.

Belts arent very expensive.Try to get an oversized belt. They are a little wider than original belts and it fixed my squeeling alternator.

I had some belt noise with Kelly springfield belts or Dayco . I played around with them for about a month..... I replaced them with OEM and the noises went away have never been back.

To answer your question you can run the car withouth the water pump / alternator belt connected. As I's sure you know, don't run it too long or the engine will heat up.
An old trick I use on belts that won't keep quiet is to take a bar of soap and rub a little on the belt. Not too much, you don't wanna make the belt slick.

I just tried this tip, and now, no more squeal at all! Thanks  :flag
I replaced to belts a few months ago and the problem was better for a week or two but then it came back loud as ever. I'll give the soap a try and if that doesn't work i'll move onto the wider belt. Do you have a PN or a descriptioin of this wider belt

Actually a candle will work betterthan soad but that is a temp Fix.......Sounds like you need to get a new belt....Mine was doing the same .....I had a Chrome alternator bracket was my problem it was flexing at around 4k or so and causing a squeal...I got an original oem bracket and no problems with squeal after that

For my '69 350, the wider alternator belt # is 17530 (Dayco), the normal one is 15530. I got both so I have a spare. It was a tight fit but coaxed it on by removing just the top adjustment bolt from the alternator and swinging it right up to the valve cover. I brought the original belt with me to parts store and they matched it up easy. :seeya
I've got a strange intermittant noise coming from mine that sounds a bit like what you've described. I've narrowed it down to the alternator because if I give it a slap the noise stops

Re: belt noises......argggggghhhhh! (challenger818)
I had a squeeler from a brand new bogus brand belt. (say that five times fast) I bought a Gates belt and the squeel went bye-bye. Seemes the Gates belt had a little more rubber content, and was a bit softer. Runs very quiet now!

just a thought... could it be the centrifigal fan clutch.. I dont know if 80s have them or not. Just a shot in the dark but why would your belts be wailing over a certain rpm. they would tend to wail when load changes.
